Archaeological collections comprise both artefacts and the documentation generated about those artefacts. The involvement of multiple datasets and professions suggests a complex infrastructure for archaeological curation. The study investigated whether curation work occurs outside of the museum exhibition setting, and how any data practices of non-museum individuals impact the practice of archaeological curation. Data were collected over the course of sixty-five hours of observations and interviews with ten repository and museum professionals. Fieldnotes and audiovisual recordings were subjected to an open coding analytical approach which eventually produced four constructed categories of work. The variance between the contributions of repository managers and museum professionals lies in different approaches to aggregating and assembling data formats, quality, and closure. There are key points of data transition between the repository and museum professions – such as physical sorting by material class and quantity; item- and collection-level condition reporting; and writing an integrative and engaging narrative – where future information research might continue in focus.
