Energy Input Analysis of Farmer Managed Rice Irrigation Scheme in North of Bénin

This study energy performance of irrigated rice, district of Karimama in the north of Bénin, was assessed through the energy indicators based on field data collected from farmer managed irrigation schemes. The energy input was analyzed under two different irrigation practices, which are full and supplemental irrigation practices. The results revealed that gasoline and nitrogen fertilizer hold the highest share of energy input, 2741 to 4386 MJ and 2484 to 4562 MJ respectively and represent 34 to 37% and 29 to 38% of total input energy respectively. The specific energy of irrigated rice production varies from 2.7 to 3.61 MJ/kg, while the energy productivity ranges between 0.28 and 0.37 kg/MJ. With the full irrigation, the total energy input ranges between 8395.2 and 11725.5 (MJ/ha), and the average energy output varied from 35184.4 to 45528.6 (MJ/ha), while total energy input of supplemental irrigation is ranging from 5682.8 to 7573.2 (MJ/ha) and the energy output varies between 21631.4 and 34696.1 (MJ/ha). Rice produced through supplemental irrigation is more energy efficient than the rice grown with full irrigation. Farmers' experience, rice yield gap, farmers' financial status and the quality of extension's technical support are the factors that affected the energy efficiency in irrigated rice.
