Heparin (HEP) and carrageenan (CAR) were used for constructing thin films on the surface of a gold3- (Au) electrode and redox properties of ferricyanide ions, Fe(CN)6 , on the film-coated electrodes werestudied. HEP- and CAR-containing thin films were successfully prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL)3- deposition of the polysaccharides and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Fe(CN)6 ionspenetrated the LbL-deposited films to exhibit redox reactions on the Au electrodes when the outermost3- surface of the film was covered with PAH. On the other hand, penetration of Fe(CN)6 ions wassuppressed when the surface of the film was covered with HEP or CAR. The results were rationalized3- on the basis of electrostatic repulsion between Fe(CN)6 anion and negative charges in HEP and CAR.3- 3- In addition, Fe(CN)6 ions were confined in the LbL films and the confined Fe(CN)6 ions weresuccessfully used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid.
