Determination of Near-Optimal Mild Steel Weld Bead Geometry using the Controlled Random Search Method

In this research work, controlled random search (CRS) method was used to optimize welding process parameters with their corresponding mechanical and quality properties. Experiments were conducted on mild steel plates measuring 40mm x 70mm x 10mm, using gas metal arc welding machine with 80% Ar, and 20% CO2 shielding gas. These experiments were carried out according to the layouts of the designed matrix and each of the experimental runs was done five times. The objective functions for the combinations of the sixteen experimental runs were computed with the highest and lowest objective functions being 1.085 and 0.045 respectively. The output results showed that a near optimal value was obtained in the 8th iteration with an objective function of 0.010, which is lower than the initial lower objective function of 0.045. The result of this iteration shows a current of 331A, voltage of 27V, welding speed of 124mmls, and welding time of 35.5 seconds. This result compared very well, with the values of 0.010 obtained using control random search (CRS) (Matlab) method. This implies that the CRS method is an effective tool for optimizing welding process parameters.
