摘要

Puberty marks the biolog ical beginning of adolescence, however, most of the adolescents are ill informed and unlikely to receive the correct information on puberty and related issues, eventually their knowledge remains superficial and ridden with myths, misperceptions. Under this situation, this study made an attempt to assess adolescent's perception and knowledge on puberty in rural and urban settings. Further it tries to understand menstruation and the issues associated with the menstruation and menstrual hygiene practices. The data were drawn from the study on 'Improving Skill building for meeting the Reproductive health needs of on-campus and off-campus adolescents, Tamilnadu' sponsored by University Grant Commission, New Delhi. The study was conducted in Tamilnadu during 2007 to 2009. The study conducted among adolescents at on-campus (urban) and off-campus (rural) of Annamalai University, Tamilnadu, India. The results show that the urban adolescent's knowledge on puberty was relatively good than the respondents in rural nevertheless both of them had poor understanding on puberty. Similarly the understanding on menstruation was also differed between the two groups. More than half of the adolescent (57.5 percent) in the off-campus were not aware of anything about menstruation before they had menstruation. On the other hand among the on-campus adolescents, more than eighty-eight percent of them were familiar with the menstruation before they experienced it (88.5 percent). Overwhelming majority of the rural adolescents (91.3 percent) had hesitation to discuss menstrual issues/problems with others. In contrast, more than one-third of the urban girls (36.5 percent) discussed menstrual issues with others preferably with mothers. With regard to hygienic practices during menstruation, the urban adolescents' awareness and behavior was much higher than the rural adolescents. Significant differentials was observed between the two groups with respect to sanitary napkin use – the urban girls likely to be much better practice of using pads (96percent) than the rural adolescent girls(36percent). With regard to cleanliness during menstruation, the urban adolescents' awareness was much higher than the rural adolescents
