摘要

The goal of this work is to show the historical evolution in longitudinal patterns in partnership formation and dissolution in Spain, and to graph its regional heterogeneity. It has become clear than stability is not the rule but the exception in a trend of continuous change. Birth cohorts have continuously delayed or moved forward its timing in partnership entrance, adapted to historical circumstances. Moreover, partnership prevalence responds to the unbalance in the marriage market and, therefore, it would not be related to any cultural revolution against the couple as a social institution for cohabitation. We find as well evidence for a gendered model in the relationship between educational attainment and partnership formation. The paper ends with the analysis in partnership dissolution patterns though widowhood and divorce, showing the actual increase in divorce and some factors that are likely to be associated with this trend.
