The investigation of nonequilibrium phenomena in physical systems has been one of themain fields of research during the part two decades. In this paper we review the resultsof such investigations on a small-size many-body system with a variable number ofparticles, i.e. on atomic nuclei. Particular attention is paid to the achievements of theZagreb group in the development and application of the preequilibrium model of nuclearreactions from its very beginning.
