Recent decades have seen an increase in the prevalence ofdiabetes in both Rhode Island and the United States. In 2010,it was estimated that approximately 8% of Rhode Island adultsage 18 years and older were living with a diagnosis of diabetes,a percentage amounting to more than 64,000 individuals.1 Thistrend of increasing diabetes prevalence is projected to continue incoming years due to the increasing rate of obesity, decreased physicalactivity, and growing elderly and minority populations.2
