Katsu?Kaishu?(1823–1899)?was?a?politician?who?was?active?from?the?end?of?the?Edo?period?to?the?beginning?of?theMeiji?period.?He?is?famous?as?captain?of?the?Kanrin?Maru,?which?was?the?first?Japanese?ship?ever?to?cross?the?PacificOcean?as?well?as?for?negotiating?the?surrender?of?Edo?castle?to?Saigo?Takamori?without?any?fighting?at?theconclusion?of?the?Boshin?Civil?War.?After?the?Meiji?Restoration,?Katsu?authored?several?historical?works,?such?asKaigun?rekishi?("Naval?History,"?published?by?Kaigunsho?in?1889).?A?collection?of?official?documents?andpublications?from?the?Edo?period?that?were?likely?reference?materials?for?Katsu's?own?books?are?now?owned?by?theNational?Diet?Library?(NDL)?and?known?as?the?Katsu?Kaishu?Papers.?The?NDL?has?digitized?all?753?items?in?thiscollection,?the?majority?of?which?are?available?via?the?Internet,?even?though?there?are?some?documents?that?areavailable?for?browsing?only?on?the?premises?at?the?NDL.
