Della Dumbaugh’s lovely piece on George Mackey (Notices,June/July 2019) reminded me of the first meeting of thefirst offering of Math 263 (The Mathematical Foundationsof Quantum Mechanics) in the spring of 1960. Mackeybegan with a general introduction to the relationship betweenphysics and mathematics. He sketched two circleson the blackboard and connected them with arrows toexplain how the real world (one of the circles) suggestedmathematical models (the other) which in turn helped usunderstand that world.
