Abstract Accessions of Malus baccata, M. kirghizorum, M. pumila, M. prunifolia, M. sylvestris, and M. x robusta (M. baccata x M. prunifolia) were screened for resistance to five basidiomycete fungi involved in root canker disease, and to woolly aphis. Some resistant plants of each species could be propagated vegetatively, indicating their potential as resistant rootstocks. Since the most severe ofthe five basidiomycete pathogens, Phanerochaete sacrata comb. nov. = Peniophora sacrata G. H. Cunn., has not been found outside Australasia, resistance to P. sacrata found in plants from seed sources in Asia was probably due to genetic diversity at some of the centres of origin of the wild apples.
