AstudywasconductedinthreedistrictsaroundLakeVictoria;Kisumu(Kenya),Kiruhura(Uganda)andTarime(Tanzania)toassessthefarmers#8217;perceptionsontick-bornediseases(TBDs)andresistanceoftheirlocalcattlebreedstoTBDs.Knowledgeandperceptionoffarmersonproductionconstraints,tickspecies,TBDsandtheircontrolmeasuresandresistanceoflocalcattletoTBDswereassessedthroughindividualinterviewsandgroupdiscussions.TheextentofEastCoastfever(ECF)infectioninlocalcattlewasassessedbymeasuringserumantibodiestoTheileriaparva.TheprevalenceofserumantibodiestoTheileriaparvawasdeterminedusinganenzyme-linkedimmunoassaytechnique.ThebreedskeptwereNyanzazebu,TarimezebuandAnkoleinKisumu,TarimeandKiruhura,respectively.Livestockdiseaseswererankedasthemostimportantconstraintstocattleproduction.nbsp;Tick-bornediseasesrankedhigherthantheotherdiseases.MostlivestockfarmersknewwellthesignsoftheTBDs.Themainsymptomsmentionedwerecircling/highstepping,redurine,harddungandswollenlymphnodesforheartwater,babesiosis,anaplasmosisandEastCoastFever(ECF),respectively.Themostprevalenttickswerebrownearticks(Rhipicephalusappendiculatus)(97.5%),blueticks(Boophilusspp)(75.8%)andbontticks(Amblylomaspp)(81.5%).About85,12.5and7.5%oftherespondentsinKiruhura,KisumuandTarime,respectively,knewthatECFiscausedbythepresenceofticksontheanimals.nbsp;ThemajorityofthefarmersdidnotassociatetheotherTBDswithticks.Thefarmers(59%)wereusingacaricidetocontrolticks.Themostcommonmethodofapplicationwashandspraying.MostfarmersusedOxytetracyclinetotreatallTBDs,however,somefarmers(20%)usedlocalherbs.About75to92.5%ofthefarmersconsideredtheirbreedstoberesistanttoticksandECF.Thereasonsgivenincludednotapplyingacaricideforalongtime,animalsalwayscarrytickswithoutgettingsickordieingandECFaffectsonlycalvesandnotadultanimals.Theserumantibodyprevalencewas80.1,78.2and60%inTarime,AnkoleandNyanzazebucattle,respectively.nbsp;TheprevalenceofantibodiestoTheileriaparvadidnotdiffersignificantly(P0.05)betweencalves(75.5%),yearlings(80%)andadultanimals(73.4%).nbsp;ItisconcludedthatTheileriaparvainfectionincattlearoundtheLakeVictoriabasinishighlyprevalent.ThefarmersknowthesignsofECF,butdonotspray/diptheiranimalsonaregularbasisbecauseofeconomicreasonsandalsotheyconsidertheirbreedstoberesistanttoticksandECF.
