Theexperimentaldesigninafieldplottrial(soilpH5.8;OM17%)conductedintherainyseason(SeptembertoOctober2012)involved24treatmentsarrangedina6*4factorialarrangementwith3replications.Thefirstfactorwaslevelofbiochar(0,1,2,3,4and5kg/m2);thesecondfactorwasthetypeofvegetable(Waterspinach,nbsp;Chinesecabbage,Celerycabbagenbsp;andMustardgreen).nbsp;Fertilizationwaswithbiodigestereffluent(10kgN/haappliedtoalltreatments.Theareaofeachplotwas1.6m2(2.0mlengthx0.8mwidth)withspacingbetweeneachplotof0.5m.Theexperimentlasted35days.Thebiochar(pH9.3;OM29.4%inDM)wasfromapaddyricedrier(combustiontemperaturewithricehusksasfeedstockwasabout500°C).Increasingtheapplicationofbiocharnbsp;from0to5kg/m2ledtolinearincreasesinbiomassDMyieldofnbsp;39,100,300and350%forWaterspinach,Chinesecabbage,CelerycabbageandMustardgreen,respectively.Soilqualitywasimprovedafterthe35daytrial(pH6.82-7.13;OM22.6-25.7%).ThechemicalcompositionofthebiomassDMshowedaverageincreasesincrudeproteinfrom13.7to18.1%forleavesandfrom7.23to9.16forstems.nbsp;Bycontrast,crudefiberinleavesdecreasedfrom14.5to9.27%inDMwhileinstemsitfellfrom15.6to10.7%.
