Themainaimofthepresentstudywastoassessthehepatoprotectiveandstress-reducingeffectofMoringaoleiferaextractagainstAeromonashydrophilainfectionandtransportation-inducedstressinAfricancatfish,Clariasgariepinusfingerlings.FishwerefeddietsrepresentingdifferentsupplementationlevelsofM.oleiferaleafextract.ThegradedlevelsofM.oleiferaleafextractwere0.00g(control),0.05g,0.10g,0.15g,0.20g,0.25gper100gineachdiet.Aftersixweeksofthefeedingtrial,fishpreviouslyfedeachexperimentaldietwereexposedtopathogenicstrainofA.hydrophilaataconcentrationof9.3×105CFU/mL.Afterbathexposure,fishfromeachdietarytreatmentwereplacedintotheaquariaculturesystem.Theywerefedtheirrespectivedietsat5%bodyweighttwicedaily,andmortalitywasmonitoredfortheremaining4weeksofthefeedingtrial.Afterthefeedingtrial,fishpreviouslyfedeachexperimentaldietwerekeptinplastictanksfora2-hourjourney.Bloodandliversampleswerecollectedforhepatocellularassessments(Aspartatetransaminase(AST),Alaninetransaminase(ALT),Lactatedehydrogenase(LDH)andMalatedehydrogenase(MDH)tests)andhistologicalexamination.ResultsshowedthattheincreasesoftheAST,ALT,LDH,MDHandhepato-histologicalinsultsinducedbystressorsweresignificantlyreduced(P0.05)bysupplementingthefishwithM.oleiferaleafextractinthediets.Basedontheresultofthisstudy,adoseof0.10g/100gdietaryMoringaleafsupplementationwassufficientashepatoprotectiveandstressreducingagentinC.gariepinusfingerlings.
