Marin Mersenne was many things: scientist, mathematicianand writer. He did original work onacoustics and on prime numbers; today his nameis linked to a family of primes called 'Mersenneprimes'. But his greatest contribution was hiswork in propagating a culture of scientiˉc inquiryin Europe { a culture which emphasizedcommunication and dissemination and learningfrom one's peers. The work done on the cycloidillustrates this theme beautifully. This articlelooks at some work for which Mersenne is bestknown.
