BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is one of the most frequent problems in orthodontics, with mandibular retrusion being the most common cause. The functional appliances, which can be removable or fixed, enhance mandibular growth through anterior repositioning of the jaw. Fixed functional appliances have the advantage of not depending on the cooperation of the patient and can be used together with fixed orthodontics, reason why they are increasingly used. ForsusTM FRD is one of the last fixed appliances developed. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effectiveness of the FRD device in growing class II patients, in skeletal and dentoalveolar terms. METHOD: A narrative review of the literature was performed through a bibliographic search of the electronic databases COCHRANE, PubMed and Tripdatabase, including articles from the last 5 years. The studies were evaluated by level of evidence and quality of the report. RESULTS: 11 articles, which analyzed the results obtained with the conventional and bone anchorage FRD treatment. DISCUSSION: Variated treatment protocols. Three studies attributed class II correction only to dentoalveolar changes, while the rest recognized both dental and skeletal changes. When using microscrew, no significant differences were seen with conventional FRD, while miniplates anchorage favored skeletal changes. CONCLUSIONS: FRD is effective in the correction of class II malocclusion mainly due to its headgear effect on the maxilla and its dentoalveolar effects. The use of microscrew has no additional advantages. Skeletal anchorage favors skeletal changes giving better results. More randomized and controlled studies are necessary.
