摘要

The advancement of information and communication technologies has enabled people to interact in new ways. The relationship mediated by these new ways, known as Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), has allowed the construction of several communities that are built and exist only insofar as its members are online. This fact has led many researchers to resort to techniques and methods of traditional research in an electronic environment, adapting these techniques and methods. One such method is ethnography, which under the name netnography has been used for studying online groups. Better understand what is the origin, methods, advantages and disadvantages and ethical issues related to netnography was the purpose of this article. In this sense, it was conducted a survey of current literature on the subject, as well as a brief comparison between ethnography and a netnography, reflecting on those practices. It is discussed that as the CMC use by members of social groups grows widespread, netnography can advance from a model based solely on the analysis of textual data and cover other types of data that can enable a richer details of studies that consider online environments.
