This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of integrated use of organic and inorganic nitrogen (N) sources on rice-wheat yield and yield parameters, soil organic carbon content and nitrate leaching. Fourteen treatments viz: control (No NPK), 100% N through fertilizer (Recommended NPK), 100% N through FM, 100% N through press mud, 100% N through poultry litter, 75% N through fertilizer + 25% N through FM, 75% N through fertilizer + 25% N through press mud, 75% N through fertilizer + 25% N through poultry litter, 50% N through fertilizer + 50% N through FM, 50% N through fertilizer + 50% N through press mud, 50% N th ro ugh f ertilizer + 50% N th roug h poul try l itter, 2 5% N through fert ilizer + 75% N throu gh FM, 25% N through fertilizer + 75 % N th roug h p ress mu d, 25% N throug h fertilizer + 75% N throug h pou ltry l itter were tested. All o rgan ic m anures were well m ixed in soil befo re fi lling the pot s. Th e resu lts ind icated that maximum pla nt h eigh t, num ber o f till ers, num ber of grains p er sp ike/panicle, 1000 g ra ins weig ht and pa ddy/g ra in yield was obta ined in trea tmen t where 7 5% N through ch emi cal ferti lizers and 2 5% N through p oultry lit ter was appli ed. The hig hest soil org anic ca rb on a fter th e h arvest o f rice a nd whea t was obt ained in treatm ent where 1 00% N was app lied th roug h farm manure while soil nit rate was maximum in trea tment where 7 5 % N th rou gh chemical fertilizers an d 2 5% N thro ugh pou ltry l itter wa s appl ied. The study conjectu red t hat com binatio n of chemica l f ertilizers an d p oultry lit ter (7 5:25) pro ved best in com pariso n with o ther integrations and sole ap plications.
