Thesouthernblack-backedgull(Larusdominicanus)isacommonspeciesthroughoutNewZealand,andhasasignificantpresenceinAucklandCity.LargecoloniesarepresentonRangitotoIslandonly8kmfromthecitya€?scentre.Theproximityofthesecoloniestotheanthropogenicresourcesofthecitymayhaveinfluencedbreedinglocationsandlocalpopulations.Usingfielddatafromthe2012/13breedingperiod,wecomparethecurrentstatusofthebreedingpopulationonRangitotoIslandwithhistoricaldatacollatedfromliterature.TheRangitotopopulationexhibitedrapidgrowththroughouttheearly20thcentury,apatternattributedtoenvironmentalchangesassociatedwithEuropeansettlementanddevelopment.Sincethe1980s,thecolonysizeshavedeclined,achangethatisconsistentwithothergullpopulationsbothnationallyandglobally.Thedriverofthepopulationchangesislikelytobetheavailabilityoffoodandtheexpansionofvegetationintothecolonies.Humandisturbanceandpredationarediscountedasimpactingonpopulationchange.
