The in.uence of the Pauli principle and the nucleon correlations in the ground states of spherical and transitional even-even nuclei on the structure of the low-lying states in odd-even nuclei is examined. We study correlations caused by the quasiparticle- phonon interaction in the ground state beyond the pairing correlations. The effects owing to the ground-state correlations (GSC) are becoming essential as the number of nucleons in the unclosed shells increase. We reason about this subject using the lan- guage of the quasiparticle phonon model which we extend to account for the existence of quasiparticle×phonon configurations in the ground states of the even-even cores.
