Gamma-rayburstsaregenerallyconsideredtobetheresultofinternalshocksgeneratedinaninhomogeneousrelativisticoutflowthatarisesfromafireball.Insuchshocks,theFermiaccelerationofprotonsisnaturallyexpectedtobeatleastasefficientasthatofelectrons.Weinvestigatetheconsequencesofprotonaccelerationintheresidualthermalphotonfieldofafireball,especiallythoseontheemissionspectraofphotons.Incontrasttomostotherstudies,wedonotinvokeadirectelectronaccelerationinshockwaves.Weshowthattheresidualradiationfieldofthefireballcanignitethephotopionproductionandsubsequentcascade,andthatthephotonsemittedinthisprocessfurtherenhancethephoton-initiatedcascade.WefindthatFermi-acceleratedprotonswith$$gtrsim10^{13},mathrm{eV}$$efficientlybringtheirenergyintopionproductionandsubsequentphotonemission.Theparticlescascadingfromthepionsemitphotonsoverawideenergyrange.Thephotonsemittedfromelectrona€“positronpairsdistributecontinuouslyfromtheGeVrangedowntotheX-rayrange,whilemuonscanemitgamma-raysbysynchrotronradiationwithabreakataround1a€“10MeV.WealsodiscussseveralradiationprocesseswhichmaypossiblyproduceabreakfeatureintheMeVrange,asobservedinadditiontomuonsynchrotronradiation.
