Amethodforacounts-in-cellsanalysisofthegalaxydistributionisinvestigatedwitharbitrarysmoothingfunctionsforobtainingthegalaxycounts.Weexplorethepossiblityofoptimizingthesmoothingfunction,whileconsideringaseriesof$$m$$-weightEpanechnikovkernels.Thepopulartop-hatandGaussiansmoothingfunctionsaretwospecialcasesinthisseries.Inthispaper,wemainlyconsiderthesecondmomentsofcounts-in-cellsasafirststep.Wehaveanalyticallyderivedthecovariancematrixamongdifferentsmoothingscalesofcells,whiletakingintoaccountpossibleoverlapsbetweencells.WefindthattheEpanechnikovkernelof$$m=1$$isbetterthantop-hatandGaussiansmoothingfunctionsinestimatingcosmologicalparameters.Asanexample,weestimatedexpectedparameterboundsthatcomeonlyfromananalysisofthesecondmomentsofthegalaxydistributionsinasurveythatissimilartotheSloanDigitalSkySurvey.
