Anewarrangementofgroovesbywhichthereturnlossperformancecharacteristicsofsubmillimeter-wavecorrugatedhornshavebeengreatlyimprovedispresented.Corrugatedhornsequippedwithgroovesarrangedasperthewayintroducedinthispapereachhavebeenfoundtobecapableofradiatingafieldwithreturnlossesof$$-$$28orlessdB,whilemaintainingmaximumcross-polarizationlevelsof$$-$$45orlessdBwithinafrequencyrangeof385GHzto500GHz.Thisisaperformancelevelgreaterthanthegoalsetforfeedhornsforradiotelescopes.Thereasonforthisenhancementofthereturnlossesisbecausethepartoftenreferredtoasthea€?mode-transformingsectiona€?hasbeenformeddifferently,thatistosaythegroovesarearrangeddifferentlyinthispartthanintheconventionalmode-transformingsection.Specifically,thenumberofgroovesprovidedinthisnewmode-transformingsectionhasbeendecreasedvis-??-visthatofthoseintheconventionalmode-transformingsection,andthesegroovesarearrangedwiththeirdepthsvariedinaccordancewiththeanglesofthesectiona€?sflares.Further,thestructureofeachgroovehasbeensosimplifiedthatitisaparallelogramincrosssection,andthepartoutsidethemode-transformingsectionisprovidedwithgroovesthatareinuniformdepthandwidthbeingarrangedataregularinterval.Despitethesimplicityofthegrooves,thereturnlossesofsubmillimeter-wavecorrugatedhornshavebeengreatlyenhancedwhiletheircross-polarradiationfieldsaremaintainedatlowlevels.
