Weconductedradiodetectionobservationsat8.4a€‰GHzfor22radio-loudbroadabsorptionline(BAL)quasars,selectedfromtheSloanDigitalSkySurveyThirdDataRelease,byavery-long-baselineinterferometry(VLBI)technique.TheVLBIinstrumentweusedwasdevelopedbytheOpticallyConnecTedArrayforVLBIExplorationproject(OCTAVE),whichisoperatedasasubarrayoftheJapaneseVLBINetwork.WeaimedtoselectBALquasarswithnonthermaljetssuitableformeasuringtheirorientationanglesandagesbysubsequentdetailedVLBIimagingstudiestoevaluatetwocontroversialissuesofwhetherBALquasarsareviewednearlyedge-on,andofwhetherBALquasarsareinashort-livedevolutionaryphaseofthequasarpopulation.Wedetected20outof22sourcesusingtheOCTAVEbaselines,implyingbrightnesstemperaturesgreaterthan10$$^{5}$$a€‰K,whichpresumablycomefromnonthermaljets.Hence,BALoutflowsandnonthermaljetscanbegeneratedsimultaneouslyinthesecentralengines.Wealsofoundfourinverted-spectrumsources,whichareinterpretedasDoppler-beamed,pole-on-viewedrelativisticjetsources,oryoungradiosources:singleedge-ongeometrycannotdescribeallBALquasars.WediscusstheimplicationsoftheOCTAVEobservationsforinvestigationsfortheorientationandevolutionarystageofBALquasars.
