UnifiedX-rayspectralandtimingstudiesofCygnusX-1inthelow/hardandhardintermediatestatewereconductedinamodel-independentmanner,usingbroadbandSuzakudataacquiredon25occasionsfrom2005to2009withatotalexposureof$$sim$$450ks.Theunabsorbed0.1a€“500keVsourceluminositychangedover0.8%a€“2.8%oftheEddingtonlimitfor14.8solarmasses.Variationsonshort(1a€“2seconds)andlong(daystomonths)timescalesrequireatleastthreeseparatecomponents:aconstantcomponentlocalizedbelow$$sim$$2keV,abroadsoftonedominatinginthe2a€“10keVrange,andahardonemostlyseeninthe10a€“300keVrange.Inviewofthetruncateddisk/hotinner-flowpicture,thesearerespectivelyinterpretedasemissionfromthetruncatedcooldisk,asoftComptoncomponent,andahardComptoncomponent.Long-termspectralevolutioncanbeproducedbytheconstantdiskincreasingintemperatureandluminosityasthetruncationradiusdecreases.ThesoftComptoncomponentlikewiseincreases,butthehardComptondoesnot,sothatthespectruminthehardintermediatestateisdominatedbythesoftComptoncomponent;ontheotherhand,thehardComptoncomponentdominatesthespectruminthedimlow/hardstate,probablyassociatedwithavariablesoftemissionprovidingseedphotonsfortheComptonization.
