Wepresentthenewsingle-dishCO(3a€“2)emissiondataobtainedtoward19early-stageand7late-stagenearbymerginggalaxiesusingtheAtacamaSubmillimeterTelescopeExperiment(ASTE).Combiningwiththesingle-dishandinterferometricdataofgalaxiesobservedinpreviousstudies,weinvestigatetherelationbetweentheCO(3a€“2)luminosity($$L^{prime}_{ mCO(3-2)}$$)andthefar-infraredluminosity(LFIR)inasampleof29early-stageand31late-stagemerginggalaxies,and28nearbyisolatedspiralgalaxies.Wefindthatnormalisolatedspiralgalaxiesandmerginggalaxieshavedifferentslopes(?±)inthe$$logL^{prime}_{ mCO(3-2)}$$a€“loga€‰LFIRplane(?±a??0.79forspiralsanda??1.12formergers).Thelargeslope(?±1)formerginggalaxiescanbeinterpretedasevidenceforincreasingstarformationefficiency(SFE=$$L_{ mFIR}/L^{prime}_{ mCO(3-2)}$$)asafunctionofLFIR.Comparingourresultswithsub-kpc-scalelocalstarformationandglobalstarburstactivityinthehigh-zuniverse,wefinddeviationsfromthelinearrelationshipinthe$$logL^{prime}_{ mCO(3-2)}$$a€“loga€‰LFIRplaneforthelate-stagemergersandhigh-zstar-forminggalaxies.Finally,wefindthattheaverageSFEgraduallyincreasesfromisolatedgalaxiestomerginggalaxiesandtohigh-zsubmillimetergalaxies/quasi-stellarobjects.Bycomparingourfindingswithresultsfromnumericalsimulations,wesuggestthat:(1)inefficientstarburststriggeredbydisk-widedenseclumpsoccurintheearlystageofinteraction,and(2)efficientstarburststriggeredbycentralconcentrationofgasoccurinthefinalstage.Asystematichighspatialresolutionsurveyofdiffuse-anddense-gastracersisthekeytoconfirmingthisscenario.
