WepresenttheresultsofX-rayobservationsof?3CassiopeiaemadewiththeASCAsatellite.SincethediscoveryofX-rayemissionfromthissystem,severalpossiblemodelsfortheoriginofX-rayshavebeenproposed,includingthecoronaof?3Cas,itself,abinaryneutron-starcompanion,andabinarywhite-dwarfcompanion.However,therehasbeennoclearwaytodistinguishwhich,ifany,ofthesemodelsiscorrect.InthispaperweexploitthespectralresolutionoftheASCASISdetectorswhich,forthefirsttime,enablestheiron-lineemissionfromthissystemtobestudiedindetail.Thelineandcontinuousspectrumof?3CasiscomparedwiththeX-rayspectraofhotcoronaeofearlytypestars,low-massX-raybinaries,high-massX-raybinaries,andwhite-dwarfbinaries.Theobservedpropertiesofrapidfluctuationsontimescalesdownto10sandaspectrumwithatemperatureof10.6keV,togetherwithironlineemission,areverysimilartothoseofbinarywhite-dwarfsystems.Assumingawhite-dwarfbinaryoriginfortheX-rays,weestimatedtheluminosityofthissystemasafunctionofthebinaryseparationusingrecentmeasurementsofthecircumstellarenvironmentof?3Cas.DespitepreviousargumentsthattheX-rayluminosityistoolargetobeaccountedforbyaccretionontoawhitedwarf,wefindthatsuchamodelis,infact,consistentwiththeobservedpropertiesofthesystem.
