Observations of umbral dots and their physical models

TheHinodesatelliteopensanewerainsunspotresearch,becauseofitshighspatialresolutionandtemporalstability.Fine-scalestructuresinsunspots,calledumbraldots(UDs),havebecomeoneofthehottesttopicsintermsofcloseobservationsofmagnetoconvection.Inthispaper,abriefreviewoftheobservedpropertiesofUDsisgivenbasedonrecentliterature.UDsbornintheperipheryoftheumbraexhibitinwardmigration,andtheirspeedsarepositivelycorrelatedwiththemagneticfieldinclination.Longer-lastingUDstendtobelargerandbrighter,whilethelifetimesofUDsshownorelationtotheirbackgroundmagneticfieldstrength.UDstendtodisappear,orstoptheirpropermotionbycollidingwithalocallystrongfieldregion.ThespatialdistributionofUDsisnotuniformoveranumbra,butisratherlocatedattheboundariesofcellularpatterns.Fromourtwo-dimensionalcorrelationanalysis,wemeasuredthecharacteristicwidthofthecellboundaries(a‰?a€‰0$${^{primeprime}_{.}}$$5)andthesizeofthecells(a‰?a€‰6a€3).WethenperformedasimplifiedanalysistoobtainstatisticsofhowtheUDdistributionisrandomorclusteredusingHinodebluecontinuumimages.WehavefoundahintthattheUDsbecomelessdenseandmoreclusteredforlater-phasesunspots.Theseresultsmayberelatedtotheevolutionalchangeofthesubsurfacestructureofasunspot.Basedontheseobservationalresults,wediscusstheirphysicalmodelsbymeansofnumericalsimulationsofmagnetoconvection.
