ThereisevidencethatthetransitingplanetHD209458bhasalargeexosphereofneutralhydrogen,basedona15%decrementinLyman-$$alpha$$fluxthatwasobservedbyVidal-Madjaretal.duringtransits.Herewereportupperlimitson$$mathrm{H}alpha$$absorptionbytheexosphere.TheresultsarebasedonopticalspectraoftheparentstarobtainedwiththeSubaruHighDispersionSpectrograph.Comparisonofthespectratakeninsideandoutsideoftransitrevealsnoexospheric$$mathrm{H}alpha$$signalgreaterthan0.1%withina5.1??…band(chosentohavethesame$$Deltalambda/lambda$$asthe15%$$mathrm{Ly}alpha$$absorption).Thecorrespondinglimitonthecolumndensityof$$n=2$$neutralhydrogenis$$N_2lesssim10^9,mathrm{cm}^{-2}$$.Thislimitconstrainsproposedmodelsinvolvingahot($$sim10^4,mathrm{K}$$)andhydrodynamicallyescapingexosphere.
