Wemadespectroscopicmonitoringobservationsofthethreeyellowhypergiants($$ ho$$Cassiopeia,HR8752,andIRC$$+$$10420)inthe0.9a€“2.4$$mu$$mwavelengthrangewitharesolutionof$$sim$$2600overafifteenmonthperiod.ThespectraofHR8752andIRC$$+$$10420showednotimevariations.Ontheotherhand,thoseof$$ ho$$Casshowedjustaseriesoftimevariationin2.3$$mu$$mCOfeaturesfromnondetectiontoabsorptionthroughemissionduring2002a€“2004.Weinterpretthisvariationasbeingaresultofanexpandinggasshellwhoseexcitationtemperaturewasbeingcooleddownto$$sim$$800a€‰K.TheCOcolumndensitieswereestimatedfromtheCOabsorptiondepths.Moreover,assumingsphericalsymmetryoftheexpandingshellwithaconstantexpansionvelocityof35a€‰kma€‰s$$^{-1}$$,astellareffectivetemperatureof7000a€‰K,astellarradiusof400$$R_{odot}$$,solarabundance,andallcarbonatomsformingCOmolecules,weestimatedthemassoftheshelltobe$$sim2 imes10^{-3}M_{odot}$$foramodelwithasingleshellexpandingfromthephotosphere,or$$sim5 imes10^{-4}M_{odot}$$foranothermodelwithanexpandingshellandastaticenvelope.Theseestimatesofthereleasedmassstronglydependonassumptionsoftheexpansionvelocity,theabundance,andthedissociationoftheCOmolecules.
