AKARI,thefirstJapanesesatellitededicatedtoinfraredastronomy,waslaunchedon2006February21,andstartedobservationsinMayofthesameyear.AKARIhasa68.5cmcooledtelescope,togetherwithtwofocal-planeinstruments,whichsurveytheskyinsixwavelengthbandsfrommida€“tofar-infrared.Theinstrumentsalsohaveacapabilityforimagingandspectroscopyinthewavelengthrange2-180$$mu$$minthepointedobservationmode,occasionallyinsertedintoacontinuoussurveyoperation.Thein-orbitcryogenlifetimeisexpectedtobeoneandahalfyears.TheAll-SkySurveywillcovermorethan90%ofthewholeskywithahigherspatialresolutionandawiderwavelengthcoveragethanthatofthepreviousIRASall-skysurvey.Point-sourcecataloguesoftheAll-SkySurveywillbereleasedtotheastronomicalcommunity.Pointedobservationswillbeusedfordeepsurveysofselectedskyareasandsystematicobservationsofimportantastronomicaltargets.Thesewillbecomeanadditionalfutureheritageofthismission.
