Wedevelopedacryogenicsystem,whichhouses3cartridge-typesuperconductor-insulator-superconductorreceiversformillimeterandsubmillimeterwavelengths.SinceitwasdesignedasaprototypereceiveroftheAtacamaLargeMillimeter/submillimeterArray(ALMA),highstability,accuratealignment,andeasyhandlingwererequired.Tomeettheserequirements,thecryogenicsystemincludedthefollowingtechnologies:1)athermallinkwithoutscrewsforreceivercartridges;2)acentralsupportstructuretoreducevacuumandgravitationaldeformation;3)bellowsstructurestoreducemechanicalvibrationofthecryocooler;and4)a3-stageGiffordMcMahon(GM)cryocoolerwithanHepot(temperaturestabilizer)toreducethethermalripple.Thecryostatandreceivercartridgesarecomposedofthreestages.Thetemperaturesonthe4a€‰K,12a€‰K,and100a€‰Kstagesofthecartridgeare3.5a€‰K,13.4a€‰K,and78.3a€‰K,respectively.Thethermalconductancesofthethermallinksshowedhighperformancesof$$1.7,mathrm{W},mathrm{K}^{-1}$$atthe4a€‰Kstage,$$5.6,mathrm{W},mathrm{K}^{-1}$$atthe12a€‰Kstage,and$$3.3,mathrm{W},mathrm{K}^{-1}$$atthe100a€‰Kstage.Themechanicalvibrationonthe4a€‰Kstageofthecartridgewasreducedtoone-tenth,assmallas$$approx2,{mumathrm{m}}$$peak-to-peak,comparedtothatonthe4a€‰Kcoldheadofthecryocooler,$$approx20,{mumathrm{m}}$$peak-to-peak.Thetemperaturerippleonthecartridgewasreducedtoassmallas2a€‰mKpeak-to-peak,whichcorrespondstoone-seventhoftherippleonthe4a€‰KcoldheadwithanHepot.
