WereportonthediscoveryofaninfraredcounterparttotheX-raytransientXTEJ1720$$-$$318on2003January18,ninedaysafteranX-rayoutburst,andtheinfraredlightcurveduringthefirst130daysaftertheoutburst.Theinfraredlightcurveshowsadeclineof$$sim1.2,mathrm{mag}$$fromthepeakmagnitudeof$$K_mathrm{s}sim15.3$$overtheobservationperiod,andasecondarymaximum,about40daysaftertheoutburst.Anothersmallincreaseinthefluxwasalsorecordedabout20daysaftertheoutburst.TheseincreaseswerealsodetectedintheX-raylightcurve.The$$JHK_mathrm{s}$$colorsareconsistentwithanX-rayirradiatedaccretiondisksufferinganextinctionof$$A_Vsim8$$,whichisalsoinferredfromitsX-rayspectrumandtheextinctionmapconstructedfromfar-infrareddustemissionofthislineofsight.These$$J,H$$,and$$K_mathrm{s}$$observationsdemonstratethatusefuldatacanbeobtainedevenforsuchanobject,whichsuffersheavyopticalextinction,possiblylocatedbeyondthegalacticcenter.
