First-Epoch VSOP Observation of 3C 380: Kinematics of the Parsec-Scale Jet

Thespace-VLBImissionVSOPprovideshigh-qualityimagingcapabilitiestoinvestigatefinestructuresinquasarjets.Wereportonthefirst-epochVSOPobservationofthesuperluminalquasar3C380at??6cm.Ahigh-qualityimagewithadynamicrangeof1:1200ataresolutionof0.74mas?—0.36masrevealsprecisestructurealongthepc-scalejet.ComponentsC2,A,andF,havebeenidentifiedwiththoseinpreviousground-VLBIobservations,andanapparentsuperluminalmotionhasbeenconfirmed.WefindaverystraightmotionwithaconstantapparentvelocityforcomponentsAandF.Eachmotionvectorisalmostparalleltoeachpositionvector.Thissuggestsaballisticejectionfromthecore.Inspiteofbetterpositionaccuracythanpreviousground-VLBIobservations,wecannotconfirmanyevidenceofaccelerationorchangesofthepositionanglewhichwerereportedinPolatidisandWilkinson(1998,AAA069.159.023).Weconfirmedthatthebentjetstructurehaskeptitssimilarityanddirection,comparedwithpreviousimages.ThissuggestsanobliqueshockinrelativisticflowratherthantheKelvin-Helmholtzinstability.
