Suzaku Results on Cygnus X-1 in the Low/Hard State

Theblack-holebinaryCygnusX-1wasobservedfor17kswiththeSuzakuX-rayobservatoryin2005October,whileitwasinalow/hardstatewitha0.7-300keVluminosityof$$4.6 imes10^{37}$$ergs$$^{-1}$$.TheXISandHXDspectra,spanning0.7-400keV,werereproducedsuccessfully,incorporatingacoolaccretiondiskandahotComptonizingcorona.Thecoronaischaracterizedbyanelectrontemperatureof$$sim$$100keV,andtwoopticaldepthsof$$sim$$0.4and$$sim$$1.5,whichaccountforthesofterandhardercontinua,respectively.Thediskhasaninnermosttemperatureof$$sim$$0.2keV,andisthoughttoprotrudehalfwayintothecorona.ThedisknotonlyprovidesseedphotonstotheComptoncloud,butalsoproducesasoftspectralexcess,amildreflectionhump,andaweaklybroadenedironline.AcomparisonwiththeSuzakudataonGROJ1655$$-$$40revealsseveralinterestingspectraldifferences,whichcanmostlybeattributedtoinclinationeffects,assumingthatthediskhasaflatgeometrywhilethecoronaisgrosslyspherical.Anintensity-sortedspectroscopyindicatesthatthecontinuumbecomeslessComptonizedwhenthesourceflaresupontimescalesof1-200s,whiletheunderlyingdiskremainsunchanged.
