Forarigidmodelsatellite,Chandrasekhara€?sdynamicalfrictionformuladescribestheorbitalevolutionquiteaccurately,whentheCoulomblogarithmischosenappropriately.However,itisnotknowniftheorbitalevolutionofarealsatellitewiththeinternaldegreeoffreedomcanbedescribedbythedynamicalfrictionformula.Weperformedan$$N$$-bodysimulationoftheorbitalevolutionofaself-consistentsatellitegalaxywithinaself-consistentparentgalaxy.Wefoundthattheorbitaldecayofthesimulatedsatelliteissignificantlyfasterthananestimatefromthedynamicalfrictionformula.Themaincauseofthisdiscrepancyisthatthestarsstrippedoutofthesatellitearestillclosetothesatellite,andincreasethedragforceonthesatellitethroughtwomechanisms.Oneisadirectdragforcefromparticlesinthetrailingtidalarm,anon-axisymmetricforcethatslowsthesatellitedown.Theotherisanindirecteffectthatiscausedbytheparticlesremainingclosetothesatelliteafterescaping.Theforcefromthemenhancesthewakecausedintheparentgalaxybydynamicalfriction,andthislargerwakeinturnslowsthesatellitedownmorethanexpectedfromthecontributionofitsboundmass.Wefoundthatthesetwohavecomparableeffects,andthatthecombinedeffectcanbeaslargeas20%ofthetotaldragforceonthesatellite.
