Wehaveuseda3-dimensionalMHDsimulationtoinvestigateadynamicprocessproducingfluxcancellationonthesolarsurface.Ourcalculationsarefullyself-consistentinthatanyprescribeddynamicprocessisnotappliedonthesurface,whichisself-consistentlygeneratedviatheemergenceofatwistedfluxtube.Mostofthefluxthatemergesbelowthesurfaceisintheformof$$Omega$$-loops(concave-downgeometry),sothatdensephotosphericplasmacandraindownalongthelegsoftheloopasitrisesintothecorona.Wehavefound,however,thatsomeU-loops(concave-upgeometry)canalsoemerge.AU-loopgeometryimpliesthatafieldlinehasadipbelowthesurfaceandalocalpeaksomewhereabovethesurfaceoneithersideofthedip.AlthoughtheemergenceofU-loopscanproducefluxcancellationonthesurface,loopswithsuchageometryarenotexpectedtoemergeeasily,duetothetrappingofdenseplasmainthedippedportionoftheloops.Ourresultsindicatethatifoneofthepeaksissufficientlylow,ontheorderofthephotosphericgravitationalscaleheightabovethesurface,plasmacandrainoutofthedippedportionbyasiphon-likemechanism,allowingtheU-partoftheloopstoemerge,andresultingincancellationofthemagneticfluxonthesurface.However,ifbothpeaksofaU-looparehighcomparedtothephotosphericscaleheight,denseplasmasimplysettlesinthedipoftheloop,preventingtheU-partfromemerging,ratherproducingreconnection,whichisanotherpossiblemechanismoffluxcancellation.Wealsodiscusstheimplicationsofourresultsforobservations.
