Whilenarrowabsorptionlines(NALs)arerelativelystable,broadabsorptionlines(BALs)andmini-BALsystemsusuallyshowviolenttimevariabilitywithinafewyearsviaamechanismthatisnotyetunderstood.Inthisstudy,weexaminethevariableionizationstate(VIS)scenarioasaplausiblemechanism,aspreviouslysuspected.Overthreeyears,weperformedphotometricmonitoringobservationsoffourmini-BALandfiveNALquasarsatzema??2.0a€“3.1usingthe105a€‰cmKisoSchmidtTelescopeinu,g,andibands.Wealsoperformedspectroscopicmonitoringobservationofoneofourmini-BALquasars(HSa€‰1603+3820)usingthe188??cmOkayamaTelescopeoverthesameperiodasthephotometricobservations.Ourmainresultsareasfollows:(1)Structurefunction(SF)analysisrevealedthatthequasarUVfluxvariabilityoverthreeyearswasnotlargeenoughtosupporttheVISscenario,unlesstheionizationconditionofoutflowgasisverylow.(2)TherewasnocrucialdifferencebetweentheSFsofmini-BALandNALquasars.(3)Thevariabilityofthemini-BALandquasarlightcurveswasweaklysynchronizedwithasmalltimedelayforHSa€‰1603+3820.TheseresultssuggestthattheVISscenariomayneedadditionalmechanismssuchasvariableshieldingbyX-raywarmabsorbers.
