Spaceverylongbaselineinterferometry(VLBI)observationsofthequasar3C216withtheVLBISpaceObservatoryProgramme(VSOP)revealthattheparsecscalestructureofthesourcecanbewelldescribedbycompactjetmodelsdevelopedforinterpretingthecoreregionofradio-loudactivegalacticnuclei(AGN).ThemeasuredbrightnesstemperatureofTB=7.9?—1011KiscomparabletotheinverseComptonlimit,fromwhichwedeterminealowerlimitof?′a??3fortheDoppler-boostingfactor.Theapparenttransversevelocityofthesuperluminalcomponentis?2app=(3.0?±0.2)ha?’1,assumingaconstantvelocity,butdecelerationofthejetmaterialcannotbeexcludedfromourdata.Acombinationoftheabovevaluesindicatesthattheviewingangleofthecore-jettotheline-of-sightislessthan19?°,andthejetLorentz-factorexceeds2.4.Theobservedsmallsizeofthesourceisprobablycausedbybothaninteractionwiththeinterstellarmediumandaprojectioneffect.
