WepresenthereX-rayobservationofaCrab-likesupernovaremnant(SNR)3C58withASCA.Wefindthattheintegratedenergyspectrumoverthenebulaisconsistentwithpreviousresults,showingapower-lawspectrumwiththephotonindexof?3=2.2a€“2.4,modifiedbyinterstellarabsorptionofabout(3a€“4)'1021cma?’2.Theinclusionofablackbodycomponent,whichisattributabletothecentralcompactsource,significantlyimprovesthespectralfit.Stringentupperlimitsforanylineemittingthinhotplasmaareestablished.WefindforthefirsttimethatthenebularspectrumisharderinthecentralpartoftheSNR,becomingsoftertowardtheperiphery,whiletheabsorptioncolumnisuniformacrossthenebula.Correspondingly,thenebularsizedecreaseswithincreasingphotonenergy,whichisasteeperfunctionoftheradiusthanthatoftheCrabnebula.Theresultsarecomparedwithsynchrotronenergy-lossmodels,andthenatureoftheputativepulsarisdiscussed.AtiminganalysiswasperformedtosearchforpulsedX-rayemissionfromthecentralcompactsource.Nosignificantpulsationswereobserved;andwepresenttheupperlimitforthepulsedfraction.
