Real Time Fatigue Detection using Eye Blink and Yawn Analysis

The pervasive use of computers in the workplace has resulted in a number of health concerns such as eyestrain, excessive tiredness and dizziness. These are all symptoms of fatigue brought about by prolonged focusing of the eyes on the computer screen which could lead to more serious illnesses. However, people often ignore fatigue and its symptoms. A system that can detect fatigue and issue a timely warning could help prevent overfatigue and ensuing illnesses. The authors propose an approach that effectively detects fatigue based on the eye size, yawn frequency and user blink rate. The system uses a standard video camera and employs different image processing techniques to calculate these factors. Image features are fed to a Support Vector Machine classifier to determine whether the user is experiencing fatigue.
