The 54th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) will be held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, January 27–31, 2018, with STS/American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Tech-Con scheduled for Saturday, January 27,?2018.The Annual Meeting is open to all physicians, residents, fellows, research scientists, perfusionists, physician assistants, nurses, and others interested in cardiothoracic surgery. Members and nonmembers are both strongly urged to register in advance. Meeting attendees will be provided with the latest scientific information and technological advances in the field.Members of the STS Workforce on Annual Meeting, along with STS President Richard L. Prager, MD, have designed an innovative, contemporary, and interactive meeting in an effort to improve the educational experience for all attendees.All attendees will receive Annual Meeting Online as part of their registration. In addition, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2018, which offers insight on the latest technological advances within cardiothoracic surgery, will focus on new devices and procedures that are not yet approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. A complete list of session titles is included at the end of this article.Three “How To” video sessions—one for each subspecialty—will be held on Sunday, January 28. These dynamic sessions will feature video presentations on common cardiothoracic surgical procedures, with speakers offering unique insights. Other sessions on Sunday include the Practice Management Summit, the STS/AATS Critical Care Symposium, and the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Symposium.The STS Annual Meeting Scientific Sessions will begin on Monday, January 29, with the J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers, the meeting’s highest-rated papers, and the much-anticipated Presidential Address from Dr Prager. After those presentations, the meeting will include a wide variety of disease-specific sessions. In addition to abstracts presenting cutting-edge research findings, these sessions will include pro/con debates and invited talks from world-renowned speakers, including a brand-new diversity and inclusion session that will explain how a diverse cardiothoracic surgery workforce can improve patient outcomes through increasing cultural competency and mitigating unconscious provider bias.The Scientific Posters & Wine event on Monday evening will give attendees the opportunity to view the 2018 posters in the company of their colleagues and the poster authors. The scientific posters will be displayed throughout the meeting, and attendees are encouraged to view the posters during session breaks to learn about the innovative research being performed in all cardiothoracic surgery subspecialties. The Business Meeting for STS Members will be held from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm Monday evening; all STS members are encouraged to attend.Tuesday, January 30, will kick off with several Meet the Experts sessions and the Health Policy Forum, followed by the Thomas B. Ferguson and C. Walton Lillehei lectures. Later that day, the Patient Safety Symposium will help attendees better understand the ways by which cognitive biases and heuristics (general rules of thumb) have an impact on how we practice cardiothoracic surgery, and a joint session with the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery will examine the treatment options available for bicuspid aortic valve disease associated with pure aortic valve insufficiency and root dilation.Concluding the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, January 31, is STS University, which offers attendees the opportunity for hands-on practice using synthetic and tissue-based simulation models. Ten courses will be offered, including new ones on peroral endoscopic myotomy and minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve surgery.
