E-booksarecommonlyperceivedasofferinggreatpotentialforlearnersupportbutalsoasstrugglingtocompetewithprintduetopooron-screenpresentation,restrictivelicencingandlimitedrangeoftitlesoffered.TheexperienceofagroupofIrishuniversitylibrariesshowsthat,withtherightcombinationofproductandsubjects,e-bookscanthriveamongstudentsandfaculty,whilelibrarianscancreatemoredynamic,relevantandflexiblecollectionsthanforprint.Subscriptionmanagementisdemandingforlibraries,however,andlicencingissuesremainhighlyproblematic,representingaformidableobstacletofullexploitation.
