摘要

We define a certain compactifiction of the general linear groupand give a modular description for its points with values inarbitrary schemes. This is a first step in the constructionof a higher rank generalization of Gieseker's degeneration ofmoduli spaces of vector bundles over a curve. We show thatour compactification has similar properties as the ``wonderfulcompactification'' of algebraic groups of adjoint type as studiedby de Concini and Procesi. As a byproduct we obtain a modulardescription of the points of the wonderful compactification of $ext{PGl}_n$.
