Rosa sempervirensL. leaves and hips (fruits) were collected in two different sites in Northern Tunisia. The leaf essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Total phenols and flavonoids from the methanolic leaf extract were determined. Rose hips β-carotene content was evaluated byhigh-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ABTS methods.Hexadecanoic acid was the major leaf essential oil component (26 to 42%). The leaf phenolics (1 to 8mg GAE/ml) and the total flavonoids (0.1 to 0.4 mgRE/ml), the rose hips β-carotene content (0.1 to 0.2mg/ml) and the leaf extract antioxidant capacities (DPPHIC502 to 20 μg/ml,ABTSIC501 to 10 μg/ml)varied greatly with the plant harvesting region.
