Thisstudyexaminedandcomparedsomephysical,chemicalandmicrobiologicalpropertiesofsoilunderanaturalrainforestecosystemandinyoung(10-12yrs)andold(50yrs)cocoaagroforests.Soilsampleswerecollectedtoadepthof30cmfromplotsdemarcatedwithineachtypeofecosystemandsoilpropertiesweredeterminedusingstandardlaboratoryprocedures.NosignificantdifferenceswerenotedinthesoiltexturalpropertiesbutsoilchemicalpropertiessuchasorganicC,totalNextractablePandexchangeableCaandMgshowedsignificantdeclineasaresultoftheconversiontococoaagroforests.SurfacesoilorganicCwasreducedby12%and31%underoldandyoungcocoaagroforestsrespectivelyinIdanre,whileareductionof24%and36%wereobservedinOmo.Lowermicrobialpopulationwasalsoobservedinthecocoaplotscomparedtothenaturalforest.
