Within a 10-day period recently, I had my 10-year-old NissanMaxima repaired,andalso both a colonoscopyandhernia surgery.Because I’m on a group medical plan, I didn’t know or carebeforehand what the medical procedures would cost. However, Iknew and cared what the car repairs would cost, because carrepairs are paid out ofmy own pocket and not the pocket of a thirdparty. In fact, the repair garage provided an estimate of the carrepair costs before proceeding, but the hospital, proctologist, andsurgeondid not provide an estimate of their charges.What the typical American family pays in medical insurancepremiums per year is difficult to knowwith certainty.The numbersare imprecise, corrupted by political agendas, and difficult forindividuals to calculate, because, for those who have employerprovidedinsurance, the cost is split by varying percentagesbetween the employer and themselves. But the most commonnumberthrownaboutby the mainstreampress is $12,000 per yearfor family coverage. The average annual premiums for employersponsoredfamilycoveragewas$13,770.
