The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between body fat percentage (Fat%) measured by absorptiometry dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and body mass index (BMI) in adolescents with Down Syndrome (DS) and develop a predictive equation of Fat% based on BMI. Twenty-six adolescents with DS and 15 adolescents without DS (CTL) were recruited. The volunteers were submitted to BMI measurements and Fat% by the DEXA technique, then a Fat% prediction equation was developed using linear regression. The equations for estimating the Fat% from BMI predicted Fat% assessed by DEXA without a significant difference for both groups (P=0.999). The values between measured and estimated %Fat showed higher correlation in both groups (P<0.05). This study provides an equation to estimate Fat% developed from the BMI values of adolescents with DS and without DS.
