Relationship between Heart Rate Deflection Point and Ventilatory Threshold in Elite Mountain Runners

The purpose of this study was to compare the physiological and performance variables corresponding to the ventilatory threshold (VT) and heart rate deflection point (HRDP) in elite mountain runners. Twelve males experienced long distance mountain runners (age: 34.08 ± 6.68 yrs; height: 176.71 ± 7.76 cm, body mass: 73.65 ± 9.16 kg) were submitted to a maximal incremental treadmill test. The initial velocity of 8 km?h~(-1) was followed by increments of 1 km?h~(-1) every minute. No differences were found between the intensity, absolute and relative heart rate corresponding to the VT and HRDP (P≥0.05). Significant correlations for the INT (r = .637; P<0.05), HR (r = .815; P<0.05) and %HR (r = .755; P<0.05), were found. The results suggest that in long distance mountain runners, the HRDP and VT are found at similar intensities, which supports the use of the HRDP as a reliable tool to estimate the second physiological transition threshold.
