Implementation of sustainable development strategies poses great challenges to European Union member states and their neighbouring countries. Empirical analysis of economic, social and environmental development characteristics in European countries reveals that current development trends are unsustainable and lead away from the strategic goals. In this regard, some future tasks are highlighted, especially from the viewpoint of interregional and intergenerational equity and responsibility.
